Kolkata: Rajarhat New Town which is the new information and public housing hub, is all set to get a digital library in near future.. Following a proposal from the National Mission of Libraries (NML), the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco) has agreed to rent out a portion of Nazrul Tirtha in Action Area I for this new digital library.
According to a Hidco official, NML director Arun Kumar Chakraborty recently sent a letter, stating that Unesco has declared the public library as a ‘Peoples’ University’ and that NML proposed to set up a modern public library in Rajarhat New Town.
An NML team reached New Town and visited Nazrul Tirtha, looking for a space on the second and third floor. The Hidco authorities then held a board meeting and the authorities agreed to rent out a portion of the building. “It would be the first digital library for the township. We will discuss further details with NML shortly,” said Hidco chairman-cum-managing director Debashis Sen.
With Hidco developing New Town as a smart city, it would only be appropriate to have a modern archive in the township that will have a digital stock of all kinds of books, magazines, journals and newspapers. Officials said that there was a plan to set up a digital library with the help of the state libraries department as there is no library in the entire township at present. The nearest library is near Ultadanga.
