Skin-Tight Jeans might soon go out of fashion

Washington: You may want to get rid of your “skinny” jeans, as a new study has shown that squatting in the tight pants for long could damage muscle and nerve fibres in the legs, making it hard to walk.A case study of a 35-year-old woman revealed that after she spent many hours squatting in the uncomfortable jeans while emptying cupboards, she arrived at hospital with severe weakness in both her ankles.

She had experienced numbness in her feet later that evening, her calves were swollen to the point that her jeans had to be cut off her, and she couldn’t move her ankles or toes properly, losing feeling in her lower legs and feet. It was found that the problems were due to the damaged muscle and nerve fibres she had suffered in her lower legs as a result of prolonged compression while squatting, which her tight jeans had made worse, the doctors suggested.

The jeans had prompted the development of compartment syndrome-reduced blood supply to the leg muscles, causing swelling of the muscles and compression of the adjacent nerves. The study published online in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery and Psychiatry.
