Siliguri: The Siliguri Municipal Corporation will install CCTV at its rubbish dump on a Sevoke Road bylane to check if carcasses are lifted for the supply to meat outlets.
The civic board will also lock the entrance to the dump from 9pm to stop unauthorised waste disposal at night.
SMC sources said the decision had been taken after recent seizure of rotten meat from a couple of meat shops in areas adjacent to Siliguri Town Station. The SMC has also received a complaint that a section of poultry farmers used to dump dead birds in the civic body’s dump at night.
The SMC sources said the person found collecting or disposing waste would have to pay from Rs 5,000 to Rs 1 lakh.
The mayor has already instructed its food inspector and other staff members to continue raids on markets where fish and meat were sold regularly. The civic officials are strictly directed to check all restaurants, hotels and food joints across the city. If any irregularities are found, they will take necessary steps with the help of police. The mayor also told the civic staff and councillors to form separate committees in all five boroughs for conducting necessary raids.
