New Delhi: Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu formally resigned from the BJP today, ANI reported his wife as saying. Sidhu’s wife, Navjot Kaur Sidhu, a lawmaker in the Punjab assembly, is also expected to soon resign from the BJP. “If some front puts interest of Punjab as its priority then I will surely join it,”Navjot Kaur said about Awaaz e Punjab.
“If the BJP doesn’t quit alliance with Akali Dal then I surely cannot continue with the BJP,” she said, She also hit back at critics who accused her of anti-party activities.
“I am an individual, I have only picked up issues of my zone, (but I’m) not being allowed to do (so). This isn’t democracy, this is dictatorship. If I raise social issues, how is it anti-party activity?” ),” Navjot said, according to ANI.
Navjot Singh Sidhu, who’s been annoyed with the BJP for a while now, had resigned from the Rajya Sabha in July. Earlier this month, the 53-year-old floated a political outfit – Awaaz-e-Punjab -ending speculation about him joining Aam Aadmi Partyc(AAP) ahead of the assembly elections in Punjab next year.
Sidhu’s new front, that comprises three sitting Punjab lawmakers, is expected to contest elections in Punjab next year. The other members of the outfit are Shiromani Akali Dal MLA, Olympian and former hockey captain Pargat Singh and two Ludhiana-based independent MLAs Simarjit Bains and Balwinder Bains.
Simarjit Bains told TOI earlier this month that they would contest all 117 seats in the state. “We are in touch with a number of MLAs from all parties,” he claimed.
“Diler sher ikatthe hue hain… Brave Punjabi men who have opposed the patronage of drugs, mining and transport mafia and poor agriculture policies of the ruling SAD-BJP government have got together,” said Pargat, who has been suspended from Akali Dal.
