Srinagar: As the death toll in the Shopian firing rose to three with one more injured youth succumbing on Wednesday, the Army has filed a counter-FIR in the case, reported. The counter-FIR was filed amid demands for the withdrawal of the FIR against Army personnel in the case by the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
The deceased youth, identified as Rayees Ahmad, was among the nine persons injured in the Army firing on Saturday. He was admitted to Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences after the incident.
Before this, two civilians – Javaid Ahmad and Suhail Ahmad – were killed in the alleged army firing after stone pelters attacked an administrative convoy of 10 Garhwal unit last week.
The Army has claimed the firing took place in self-defence after seven of its personnel were injured in the mob attack. A junior level officer fell unconscious following the mob attack, according to Army.
An FIR of murder was registered by Jammu and Kashmir Police against the soldiers of the unit. Besides this, a magisterial probe has also been ordered by the J&K government into the firing incident.
The BJP has demanded withdrawal of the FIR while the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said the investigation into the killings of the civilians would be taken to its logical conclusion.
