Shoe hurled at Indian Minister at New York


New York: Tota Singh, Minister of the Punjab Government for NRI affairs and his delegation came under attack from the protesting Sikhs during his visit to New York with shoes being hurled at the minister. The Minister and his delegation comprising of Shiromani Akali Dal leaders were scheduled to address a meeting at Richmond Hill in the Queens borough on Saturday.

Following the incident police took two people in custody. Hundreds of Sikhs, protesting the visit and chanting slogans accumulated in the area following which a huge contingent of New York police was summoned in the area.

Police said two persons were arrested for obstructing governmental administration, unlawful assembly and disorderly conduct. SFJ said the protesters pelted stones and even hurled a shoe at Mr. Singh and other Akali leaders as they tried to speak to pacify the mob. They were whisked away from the venue amidst heavy police protection.
