Shiv Sena attacks PDP over Afzal Guru’s remains

Mumbai: The Shiv Sena on Saturday attacked the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for backing the demand for returning Parliament attack case convict Afzal Guru’s remains to Kashmir. In an editorial in party’s mouthpiece ‘Saamana’, Sena said the demand was nothing short of treason.

Demanding the remains of Afzal Guru is anti-national. Guru had committed a crime against the nation and showing sympathy to him would mean ridiculing the Judgement of the Supreme Court and the Indian law,” said an editorial in Sena mouthpiece Samna. The editorial is regarded as the opinion of Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray.

Eight PDP MLAs had issued a statement on on March 1 supporting independent MLA Engineer Rashid’s earlier resolution. The statement was signed by Mohammad Khalil Bandh, Zahoor Ahmed Mir, Raja Manzoor Ahmad, Mohd Abas Wani, Yawar Dilawar Mir, Advocate Mohd Yosuf, Aijaz Ahmad Mir and Noor Mohd Sheikh.

Soon after the PDP-BJP coalition government took charge in the state, a group of MLAs from Mufti’s People’s Democratic Party, had demanded that the mortal remains of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru be returned. Guru was hanged on February 9, 2013 inside Tihar Jail for his involvement in the December 2001 attack on Parliament.
