New Delhi: Ravi Shastri will skip India‘s tour of Zimbabwe, if latest reports are to be believed. The Team India Director, whose contract was recently extended by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), will skip the series due to professional commitments for the upcoming Ashes series that will occur during the same time.
According to a report on ESPNCricinfo, the Indian squad that will fly to Zimbabwe to play three One-Day Internationals (ODI) and two Twenty20 Internationals (T20I), will be managed by the assistant coach trio of Bharat Arun, Sanjay Bangar and R Sridhar, who have been a part of the coaching staff of the ‘Men in Blue’ for almost a year now.
According to the report, Shastri was offered a deal by Sky, the official broadcasters of the Ashes, before getting offered the role of the team director. The former Indian cricketer had clearly indicated that he would not be available for the Zimbabwe tour, though the board officials are hopeful of his presence during India’s tour of Sri Lanka.
Earlier in the day, the national selectors announced the India squad for the Zimbabwe tour, with Ajinkya Rahane being chosen as the captain of the side that was without names such as MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Umesh Yadav, Shikhar Dhawan, etc. The squad also included Harbhajan Singh, who recently made his comeback into the India side during the tour of Bangladesh.
The squad also included the likes of Robin Uthappa, Murali Vijay, Manoj Tiwary etc. The selectors also announced the India ‘A’ squad for the upcoming triangular series to be held at Chennai and Wayanad, also featuring the ‘A’ teams of Australia and South Africa. Cheteshwar Pujara has been picked as the skipper of the squad.
