New Delhi: India are set to take on Afghanistan in a historic one-off Test against Afghanistan, which kicks off on Thursday at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. It will be the first ever Test match in the visitors’ cricketing history, as they received their Test status last year along with Ireland.
The BCCI had announced a 15-man squad earlier but now, Mohammed Shami will not be a part of it after he failed a fitness test held at the NCA in Bengaluru. As a result, he will be replaced by Delhi pacer Navdeep Saini, who had a wonderful Ranji Trophy Season in 2017-18, which saw him pick 34 wickets in just eight matches.
Shami, who is 27 years old, has had a number of issues with his fitness over the course of his career. He was part of the team that toured South Africa earlier this year, where he took 15 wickets in total and played all three Test matches. He is one of the most experienced and important members in India’s pace attack, and will be a crucial role to play in the team’s upcoming tours of England and Australia.
The Indian team will be led by Ajinkya Rahane, who will fill in the role for Virat Kohli, who is currently nursing an injury.
