Abu Dhabi: Former World number one and reigning Australian Open champion Serena Williams could make a comeback on tennis court after the birth of her first child at Mubadala Exhibition Event in Dubai on 30 December. Serena will begin her title defence of Australian Open next month.
The 36-year-old has not played since clinching a 23rd Grand Slam singles title 11 months ago, after revealing she was pregnant during the tournament and taking time off to give birth to her first child, Alexis Olympia in September.
Serena may face Latvia’s French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in first round women’s match at Dubai. Serena currently holds 23 grandslam titles , only one short of all time record of 24 slams held by Margaret Court.
“I am delighted to be returning to the court in Abu Dhabi for the first time since the birth of my daughter,” she said in a statement released by the tournament organisers on Sunday.
