Kolkata: The West Bengal Government is soon going to buy sea scooters for rescuing swimmers stuck in high waters. These scooters would be operated by the coastal police force.
The sea scooters would prevent fatalities from these accidents. The scooters would be of use not only for rescuing swimmers but also fishermen whose boats and trawlers may overturn due to strong currents or storms.
Kolkata Police has six such scooters at present. For patrolling the coasts, the coastal police has 10 all-terrain vehicles. Along with the popularity of coastal tourism has come the attendant problem of marine accidents.
People sometimes wrongly gauge the depth of water, direction of current, tidal situations, and fall in trouble.
