School Girl Murder Case: 4 Sentenced to Death

Dhaka: A tribunal has sentenced four people to death for the rape and murder of ninth-grader Jakia Sultana Champa in Faridpur in 2012.

Judge Abdur Rahman Sardar of Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 also slapped 20,000 fines on each. The convicts will have to serve three additional years in prison if they fail to pay the fine.

The convicts are Jahid Sardar, 24, Shamim Mandal, 24, Akash Mandal, 24, of Rajbari, and Babul Hossain, 22, of Faridpur.
The court cleared a fifth accused, Mousumi Begum, of the charges.

Purdia High School student Champa was found hanging from a tree near her house on Dec 13, 2012. Her brother Hasibul Islam accused six persons in a case two days later. But police pressed murder and rape charges in court against five people on May 20, 2013.

The student’s body was exhumed for a second post-mortem examination because of a mass agitation, Faridpur Public Prosecutor Md Khasruzzaman said.

The case was shifted to the Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 on June 9 last year.
