SC asks West Bengal govt to complete reconstitution of civic bodies

Kolkata:West Bengal Government was asked by the Supreme Court to complete by June 30 the exercise to reconstitute seven municipal bodies to enable the state election commission to hold elections.A vacation bench comprising Justices A K Sikri and U U Lalit said the election process would involve demarcation of constituencies, including the reserved constituencies.

The bench, which was hearing the petition by the state government for postponing the elections to complete the formalities for reconstituting the municipal bodies, modified the Calcutta High Court’s May 15 order which had directed completion of the polls within two months.It said for conducting “free and fair” polls, the state poll panel can approach the Centre for central forces to hold elections to seven municipal bodies – Asansol Municipal Corporation, and Kulti, Raniganj, Jamuria, Bidhannagar, Rajarhat-Gopalpur and Bally municipalities.

The state government submitted that the exercise of reconstituting the seven municipal bodies was at an advanced stage and would be completed by June 16.
