SC Allows Rail Line Through Mahananda

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed the construction of railway line through the Mahananda National Park in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district but asked the state government to issue the relevant notification within two months.

The apex court said this railway line is critical for Sikkim and instructed northeast frontier railway to strictly comply with the conditions and the environmental safeguards laid out by the National Board for Wildlife. The project, which was incomplete due to certain stretch of railway line falling in the forest land, was supposed to be ready by December 2015.
