Update 02:26 pm : Delivering a severe jolt to Madan Mitra, Calcutta High Court on Thursday rejected his bail granted by Alipore court and ordered an immediate surrender before CBI.
The division Bench of Justice Nishith Matre and Justice Tapan Mukherjee rejected argument forwarded by Madan Mitra;s lawyer and ordered him to surrender before Alipore court immediately. The division bench also junked the proposal to grant seven days to Madan and a house arrest.
As per reports, Madan broke into tears after the decision.
Kolkata: Former West Bengal transport minister Madan Mitra, an accused in the multi-crore Saradha scam is awaiting the judgment of Calcutta High Court on a petition filed by CBI opposing the bail granted to him by Alipore court.
The CBI probing the scam had filed an petition in Calcuta High Court against the bail granted to Madan by a lower court a few days ago. As of now the hearing has ended and the judges are to announce the verdict shortly.
The CBI counsel opposing the minister’s bail had argued that “breaching people’s trust and cheating is a heinous social crime”.
Madan Mitra on Wednesday resigned from the post of Transport Minister as he was repeatedly accused of influencing the probe through his position.
