Kolkata: Breaking her prolong silence West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday extended her support to jailed former state transport minster Madan Mitra who is an accused in the multi-crore Saradha scam and said she believed his innocence.
Mamata said, “I believe Madan Mitra is not involved in the scam and has been falsely implicated.”
However, the sudden change in Mamata’s overture has raised eyebrows as she had earlier kept mum on the Madan issue. Mamata had earlier commented that a party can not be blamed for a crime committed by an individual indirectly hitting at Madan Mitra and other Saradha scam accused.
However, reacting to Mamata’s comment, CPM leader Sujan Chokrabarty said that the statement is politically motivated. Hitting at Mamata he said, “Everybody know who gobbled up Saradha money. Madan Mitra is a mere pawn and his masters are yet untouched.”
BJP leader Shamik Bhattacharya also reacted strongly and said as the entire matter is in judicial hands it is not appropriate for the CM to comment on the matter.
