Melbourne: Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis on Friday created history at the Rod Laver Arena, as they not only won a third consecutive Grand Slam together but also their 36th match on the trot.

The Indo-Swiss pair beat Andrea Hlavackova, Lucie Hradecka 7-6, 6-3 in the final to win the year’s first major.
While they struggled to come up tops in the first set, Hingis and Mirza were back to their brutal best in the second.

Sania and Martina are now just eight matches away from equalling the all-time record of 44 set by Jana Novotna and Helena Sukova in 1990.

The duo was recognized as WTA’s ‘Doubles Team of the Year’ last December and have been in red-hot form ever since teaming up in 2015.

Dubbed ‘Santina’ on the circuit, the No.1 seeds crushed Julia Goerges and Karolina Pliskova 6-1 6-0 in less than an hour in the semi-final.

Since their French Open exit in 2015, Sania and Martina have now won 43 of the next 46 matches with titles at Wimbledon, the US Open, Guangzhou, Wuhan, Beijing, the WTA Finals in Singapore, Brisbane and Sydney.
