Mumbai: Justice delayed may not always be justice denied, after a delay of almost 13 years justice prevailed as Salman Khan was convicted and sentenced for five years in jail by the Mumbai session court on Wednesday.
The court also fined the actor’s brother Arbaaz Khan for intentionally wasting court’s time. Salman could be taken to Arthur Road jail. Although a sentence has been declared, the court refrains from slapping any compensation on Salman.
The sessions court on Wednesday convicted Salman Khan in the 2002 ‘hit and run’ case. The conviction was pronounced by session judge DW Deshpande of the Mumbai sessions court. The court found Salman guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The court said that Salman was drunk driving killing the people on footpath. The court also said that Salman fled the spot after committing the accident. The case has riveted the nation’s attention for 13 years. Earlier on Tuesday the Bollywood fraternity lobbied behind Salman, including rival Shahrukh Khan.
Nurullah Mehboob Sharif was killed and four others were injured after Khan’s Toyota Land Cruiser ran up the stairs of American Express Laundry on Hill Road at Bandra in the intervening night of September 27 and 28, 2002. Khan was arrested and freed the same day after a medical check-up. He was rearrested in October 2002, but got bail from the session court.
