Mumbai: Bollywood superstar Salman Khan is planning to launch his own smartphone venture dubbed ‘BeingSmart’. He has reportedly been gathering investors for his smartphone venture in which he may either take a majority share directly or through his family. BeingSmart’ will focus on smartphones aimed at the entry level/ mid range market.
According to media report, Salman has reportedly already selected the Chinese plant which will manufacture the devices and has also picked smartphone models that will run on Android and cost below Rs 20,000. He is also in the process of building an operational management team to be headed by an executive with stints at Samsung and Micromax in leading positions.
This is not the first time Bollywood’s most bankable superstar has branched into other business ventures. He already own the BeingHuman brand which produces trinkets, accessories and garments and has various outlets in many cities. The smartphones are expected to be sold online initially with an offline retail presence planned soon after through a partnership with large cellphone and electronic chains.
It is very possible that the devices will also be sold through BeingHuman outlets. Salman had reportedly tried entering into the smartphone game two years ago through a a partnership with existing OEM’s. However, the few brands who had expressed interest backed off due to the high royalty charges he was demanding. An executive told Economic Times “But this time, Salman is himself driving the show and searching for an investor. He expects to launch the devices in the next two quarters and definitely before the festive season”.
