Sydney: India’s journey at the Australian Open Super Series ended after World No. 1 and defending champion Saina Nehwal suffered a 15-21 13-21 quarter-final loss to Shixian Wang on Friday.
The Indian found it extremely difficult to match Wang’s play and looked fatigued. She battled hard against the Chinese before losing the encounter in just 42 minutes.
On Thursday, Saina survived a challenge from Sun Yu to beat her 21-19 19-21 21-14 and advance to the quarter-finals.
The last few months have been exceptional from Saina as she became the first Indian to claim the top spot in women’s badminton.
