S Prabakaran Elected Bar Council of India Chairman


Chennai: Tamil Nadu lawyer S Prabakaran was on Sunday elected chairman of the Bar Council of India ( BCI). He succeeds Manan Kumar Mishra of Bihar.

The BCI is the apex statutory body of lawyers, having powers to regulate legal education and control practice.

Elected as member of Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in 2011 with second highest number of votes among 20-odd members, Prabakaran was then chosen by the state council as its representative in BCI, Delhi.

In 2012, the BCI nominated him as chairman of its disciplinary committee.

In 2013, Prabakaran was elected co-chairman of the BCI.

Prabhakaran is a three-time president of the Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHAA), and he is also president of the Tamil Nadu Advocates Association (TNAA).
