Moscow: Russia has lifted the ban on the supply of sophisticated air defense missile system to Iran. The delivery of the S-300s was cancelled in 2010 after sanctions were imposed on Iran over its nuclear programme.
The go ahead on the deal was given by Russian President Vladimir Putin after Tehran struck an interim deal with the world powers to curb the nuclear activities. Although the restrictions were imposed, Russia and Iran had remained close allies.
The contract was heavily criticized by the Israel and the U.S. who feared that it could be used to protect Iranian nuclear sites.
On the other, Russian Foreign Minister Sergy Lavrov said in a statement that the sale was put on hold entirely voluntarily to aid the talks on Iran’s nuclear programme. The Russian defence ministry also said that is was ready to supply the equipment to Iran.
