Ruckus At ‘Amra Akranta’ Meeting, Police Detained Seven Including Ambikesh

Canning: Five members of the civil society group ‘Amra Akranta’ have been injured after Trinamool cadres attacked them during a street meeting at Canning in South 24-Parganas on Thursday.

The injured include Jadavpur University professor Ambikesh Mahapatra of Mamata Banerjee’s cartoon fame and four others named Maidul Islam, Khokon Das, Amalendu Bera, and Arunavo Ganguly. A Trinamool cadre named Rakesh Debnath has also been injured when ‘Amra Akranta’ members tried to resist the attack.

The attack took place when the civil society group led by Mahapatra were holding a street meeting Canning Bus Stand protesting the death of Riyazul Molla (9) who died of bullet injury on 18 January after getting trapped in a Trinamool factional clash at Basanti while returning from school.

Trinamool workers at Canning alleged that ‘Amra Akranta’ speakers were calling the party and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee names in their speech. Peeved at this, some young Trinamool cadres asked them to stop the meeting and this led to a commotion.

This led to an attack, which disrupted the street meeting and left Mahapatra and his fellow activists injured. In defence, ‘Amra Akranta’ members roughed up a Trinamool cadre.

Amidst this chaos, a police team rushed in and detained Mahapatra and six other members of ‘Amra Akranta’ who were present at the spot. Some of them were later taken to Canning Sub-divisional Hospital for outdoor treatment. Police have said the ‘Amra Akranta’ did not take prior permission for holding the street meeting today.
