Kolkata: To give a boost to on-going Metro railway projects in and around Kolkata, Rs 650 crores have been allocated in the Railway Budget 2017-18 that Union finance minister tabled in Parliament together with the Union Budget on 01 February.
The Centre released the Pink Book offering details of all the budgetary allotment for railway projects. Going by this, Rs 250-crore is the highest amount that has been allocated for the Dum Dum Airport-New Garia via Rajarhat (32 km) Metro line that is under construction for the past few years. In fact, a substantial portion of the project at EM Bypass and Salt Lake has been completed; works are pending at Rajarjat-Airport end.
Next, Rs 220-crore has been allocated for the Noapara-Barasat via Airport Metro route (18 km) that has made little progress beyond Dum Dum Cantonment due to encroachments along the proposed alignment.
Another Rs 100-crore has been set aside for the 14.5 km Baranagar-Barrackpore and Dakshineswar Metro line that has made some progress from Noapara to Baranagar.
