Kolkata: The skywalk at Dakshineshwar was unveiled recently. During inauguration, chief minister Mamata Banerjee had announced that a skywalk will be set-up at Kalighat too. Soon after the announcement, the process for it has started.
According to Nabanna sources, 125 crores of rupees has been allocated for the skywalk at Kalighat. As per the administration, the work for the construction will begin soon.
A 380-metre long skywalk has been set-up to go to Dakshineshwar for which Rs 65 crores were spent. The skywalk at Kalighat will be much bigger than this. It will be almost 450 metre in length and 10.5 metre in width. Hence, the expenditure will be much more.
The administration wants to start work in March 2019 and complete it by October 2020. KMD will be responsible for the construction work. However the permission of RITES will be taken before starting the work. As per the administration, the skywalk will begin from the north side of the SP Mukherjee road and end near Kalighat police station. A proposal for a separate footbridge has been made for those coming from the south. The footbridge will be connected to the skywalk. The connection will be made in front of the Greek Orthodox Church. One can directly board the skywalk after coming out of the Kalighat metro station.According to the administration, the construction of Kalighat skywalk will not be as easy as the Dakshineshwar skywalk because, there is a metro line just below the place where the Kalighat skywalk will be constructed. Hence, while the work is on, it needs to be ensured that the metro tunnel suffers no damage. However, at first a primary discussion will have to be made with the metro authorities.
There are many hawkers near the Kalighat temple which will pose as a big problem. After ensuring this problem, then only the work will begin.
