Surat: A 27-year-old alleged thief of auto-rickshaws was arrested from Navsari Bazaar area of the city on Wednesday. He had spent around six years in different jails of Mumbai. The accused confessed to police to having committed the crimes as he wanted to live in jail. He wanted to stay detached from the world after his break-up with girlfriend and had started stealing at the age of 13.
Mehboobkhan Pathan first stole Rs 250 in cash from his house in Rander when he was studying in class VII. He told the police that he stole since he was upset after his break-up. His girlfriend’s marriage was fixed with someone else and his affair had ended abruptly. This had made him angry and he carried out several petty thefts in and around his house. His family tried to reform him. They took him to a tantrik, but it was of no help. His father then called his friends home to thrash Pathan and kept him in chains. But Pathan managed to escape and went to Mumbai.
Pathan told the police that he started stealing mobile phones and laptops in different areas of Mumbai and got caught several times. He was lodged in Byculla, Central, Thane, Kalyan and Yerwada prisons of Maharashtra for the thefts. He told the police that he lived in dormitories and at railway stations of Mumbai most of the time.
He came to Ankleshwar in April and was living at the railway station there. He started stealing auto-rickshaws in Ankleshwar and later Surat. After stealing rickshaws worth Rs 50,000, Pathan sold the goods for Rs 1,500. He has stolen seven auto-rickshaws since April.
“Pathan started stealing at a very young age and majority of his crimes were committed in Mumbai. After arrest, he confessed to his crime immediately since he was ready to go to jail. He wants to spend most of his time in jail,” said B K Vanar, police inspector, Salabatpura police station.
