New Delhi: Ahead of the Lankan Series, comes a good news for Indian star batsman Rohit Sharma. Rohit has been nominated for Arjuna award. The decison was taken at a 12-member committee meeting which was held in the capital city on Tuesday. Sharma holds the record for scoring two double centuries in one-day international cricket. His 264 against Australia at M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru is the highest ever score in ODI. The Mumbai batsman has impressive career averages of 39.29 and 39.20 in Tests and ODIs respectively.
Along with Sharma, Jitu Rai (shooting), Srikanth, Dipa Karmakar (gymnastics), P.R. Sreejesh (hockey), Babita (wrestling), M.R. Poovamma (athletics) and Sharath Gayakwad (para-swimming) are some names most likely to be recommended for the Arjuna without much debate. As many as 92 sportspersons from various disciplines have been nominated for the Arjuna Award, and owing to some good results at last year's Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, the committee is likely to push for more than 15 sportspersons this year.The National Sports Awards will be presented by President Pranab Mukherjee at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on August 29, the birth anniversary of legendary hockey player Dhyan Chand.
