New Delhi: Rich tributes were paid on Thursday to colonel MN Rai, who was martyred in an encounter with militants a day after he got his gallantry award on Republic Day in New DElhi. His body was brought to the capital where his funeral was held with full military honours.

Army Chief Dalbir Singh paid floral tributes to Martyr Col. M N Rai. Army Chief also met Col. Rai’s family and expressed his condolences.
Col Rai is survived by his wife and three children. With tears welling in the eyes, eldest daughter of Rai paid tribute to her father with a big salute. Family members were inconsolable as other top Army officials paid their last respects.
Col. M N Rai was martyred on Tuesday in an encounter with terrorists in the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir.
The colonel was honoured with a gallantry medal on Republic Day just a day ahead of his fatal encounter that also claimed the life of a police constable.
The Army Chief hailed his sacrifice and called him a braveheart who led his men from the front.
Col. MN Rai laid down his life for the integrity of the nation and security of his countrymen. He will always be remembered for his exemplary courage and sacrifice.
