Renowned Litterateur Mahasweta Devi Cremated With Full State Honours


Kolkata: Renowned litterateur Mahasweta Devi has been creamated with full state honours on Friday at Keoratola Mahasashan (Crematorium).

Eminent litterateur Mahasweta Devi was given a gun salute at the Keoratola Mahashasha (Crematorium) as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had promised cremation with complete State honours. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, several of her ministers, other litterateurs, her fans followed the procession to the crematorium to bid their final adieu to the creator of ‘Hajar Churasir Ma’.

Mahasweta Devi’s body was kept laid at Rabindra Sadan since Friday morning for her followers and others to pay their last respects. Mamata Banerjee also paid her respects to the mortal remains of Mahasweta Devi at Sadan.

Renowned author and social activist Mahasweta Devi who was admitted at a private hospital under critically conditions passed away on Thursday at age 90.

Creator of ‘Hajar Churasir Ma’ passed away at 3:16 pm on Thursday at a private hospital in Minto Park. She was admitted in the hospital since May 22. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived in Kolkata after cutting short her tour.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had tweeted on Mahasweta Devi’s death:

“India has lost a great writer. Bengal has lost a glorious mother. I have lost a personal guide. Mahashweta Di rest in peace “

The ninety year old recipient of Padma Vibhushan and Jnanpith award was admitted at Belle Vue Clinic in central Kolkata more than a month ago with age related ailments. But her condition became critical after she suffered kidney disorder and blood infection.

According to doctors attending on her, she had shown some response to the treatment but remained to be critical. Earlier, this year, Mahasweta Devi had undergone treatment at the same hospital and was released after her condition improved. But her health worsened on Thursday and finally she passed away.
