Rebels form new party in Greece after PM’s resignation

Athens: Twenty-five rebels from Greece’s Syriza party on Friday said that they would be forming a new Parliamentary Party after Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras resigned and announced snap polls. The new party will be known as Popular Unity and will be led by former Energy Minister Panagiotis Lafazanis.

The party came to power in January with the vow of ending austerity measures. The party has been divided recently over Greece accepting a third bailout package. A revolt within his own party forced Tsipras to announce his resignation on Thursday.
