New Delhi: Congress VP Rahul Gandhi will visit Hyderabad Central University on Tuesday and meet the family of the Dalit Ph. D student who committed suicide on Sunday.
The suicide of Rohith Vemula has triggered protests from students even as Union Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya and the VC were named in an FIR in this regard.
Congress party has demanded immediate sacking of Dattatreya. It also wanted that the University Vice Chancellor be removed and HRD Minister Smriti Irani should go there to ensure a probe. Its student arm NSUI staged a demonstration outside Irani’s residence.
An anti-Dalit atmosphere has been created systematically in the country over the past few months, Congress spokesperson RPN Singh alleged.
The 28-year-old, a second year research scholar of science, technology and society studies department, was found hanging in his friend’s room in the hostel on Sunday.
He was one of the five students expelled from the hostel and barred from all facilities except their classrooms following a clash with leaders of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
Protesting students on Monday demanded police to register a case under SC/ST Atrocity Act against BJP leader Dattatreya while alleging that he had written to HRD ministry seeking action against these research scholars.
