New Delhi:The congress working committee is scheduled to meet on Tuesday which may decide on the fate of Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi who is scheduled to make to the top spot of the congress party in the meeting.
With the growing rumors that Rahul could be named the next congress chief after his mother Sonia Gandhi, Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh also said that Prince Rahul Gandhi should make it to the top post.
“I have been saying for a long time and I maintain my words. I am firm that Rahul Gandhi has handled the responsibility of vice-president and my request to Congress leadership and Sonia Gandhiji is that he should be given the responsibility of the AICC,” he had said while replying to whether he thinks it was time Rahul Gandhi should take up the leadership responsibility in the party and become Congress President.
The congress is going through an organizational poll that would elect the new President in August-September while an AICC meeting is likely to take place in March.
Advocating Rahul’s candidature, Singh said that congress has always encouraged young leadership. Pointing to India’s 1st Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad he said that both of them had attained the top post at the age of 38 and 35 respectively.
Sonia Gandhi is the longest serving Congress chief at the age of 68. She took charge of the party in 1998, while her son Rahul is 44.
