RANCHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jharkand for addressing panchayat representatives was marked by protests in East Singhbhum and Ranchi district on Sunday.
State’s main opposition party Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and Jharkhand’s Adivasi Moolvasi Janadhikar Manch, Adivasi Janadhikar Manch besides some other organizations had called a bandh to draw PM’s attention to the recently announced local resident policy which the protesters claim is tilted towards non-tribals.
Three JMM MLAs Deepak Birua (Chaibasa) Neelay Purty (Majhgaon) and Samad (Chakradharpur) were taken into preventive custody on Friday night. Former minister and Saraikela MLA Champai Soren was in police custody on Sunday.
Jamshedpur, Ranchi, Chaibasa, Bokaro, Saraikela and other districts witnessed protests. No protester was allowed to go close to the venue where PM addressed a function or the route the PM took from airport to the venue.
Two commercial vehicles were torched in East Singhbhum while protesters attacked Rajdhani Express in Ranchi. As a preventive measure section 144 was imposed in Ranchi, said Ranchi DC Manoj Kumar.
State police spokesperson S N Pradhan said several protestors were arrested and released in the evening.
