Professors take to streets protesting against CU clashes


Kolkata: After things turned ugly on Wednesday over the clashes between the supporters of TMCP and WebCUTA, the Professors throughout the colleges of the city have taken to the streets in protest of the incident where supporters of both the sides were injured. Students’ Federation of India has called for a rally on Thursday from Sealdah to College Street while the Professors is also marching from Rajabazar Science College to College Street wearing black badges.

Whereas, Education Minister Partha Chatterjee defended the students saying that allegations of clashes were false and no teacher has been heckled. He is also scheduled to meet the representatives of Webcuta and TMCP on July 3 to address their grievances. WebCUTA Secretary Dippendu Paul was reported to have been attacked by the students.

WebCUTA has demanded the reinstatement of Finance Secretary of Calcutta University Harisadhan Ghosh who has been accused of financial irregularities amounting to 786 crores. He has already been suspended by the Calcutta University authorities.

According to sources, the amount has been kept in foreign banks in various fixed deposits. The matter has been brought to the notice of the Calcutta High Court. The WebCUTA members have demanded that since Ghosh has not been proven guilty till now, it is incorrect to suspend him.
