Rituparno Ghosh was one of the few openly gay figures in Indian cinema and was considered an icon of the LGBT community of India. Today the apex court has lifted a colonial-era ban on gay sex. It is a historical win for the entire LGBT community. When Mousumi Das of Kolkata24x7 quizzes the “Season’s Greetings” producer Aritra Das , he stated how the movie is related to the issue of Section 377.

Q1. How is “Season’s Greetings” related to the section 377 issue?

Kindly wait till we are ready with our film. Its true early for us to talk about the story of the film.

Q2. Your short film “Season’s Greetings” is an honour to give tribute to the great film maker Rituparno Ghosh, what would you say about it?

Rituparno Ghosh was one of the most important film maker who spoke openly about relationship, love and choices of love. This film talks about relationships that needs attention which we often tend to forget in our daily life.

Q3. Will audience get the reflection of the great film maker Rituparno Ghosh’s sense and sensibility in your short film?

My director Ram Kamal Mukherjee has been working on this subject for last couple of months and we assure that we will retain the sense and sensibility of Rituparno Ghosh in our humble tribute to the legendary film maker. The aesthetics of Rituda will be seeing through the eyes of Ram Kamal.

Q4. As an individual and being a responsible citizen how do you welcome the apex court’s verdict on section 377 ?

This verdict was long pending and as an individual I welcome the verdict of honorable Supreme Court because everyone under the sky have the right to live and love whoever they want. Hope this judgment will end the colonial stain that we have been bearing since India’s independence.

Q5. Do you believe society will break the taboo and accept LGBT community and the apex court’s decision on Freedom of love or the gay sex?

Society is not above the court of law, they better accept it.

Q6. As a film maker do you believe that more awareness is needed to make society accept this natural orientation of humans and do you think more film should be made based on this topic?

I totally agree with you on this one. As a producer I feel that we need to make more content that will educate and inspire people to accept LGBTQ community with open arms. I personally feel that filmmakers like Onir (My Brother Nikhil), Deepa Mehta (Fire), Hansal Mehta (Aligarh), Sanjay Nag (Memories of March), Kaushik Ganguly (Arekti Premer Galpo) and Rituparno Ghosh (Chitrangada) are few of the finest films made on LGBTQ community. More directors and filmmakers should come forth in making films on this subject.
