Kolkata: The body of a 24-year-old pregnant woman, Sudha Shaw was found lying in the alley of a Marquees Street slum near her home at New Market on Thursday evening. The body bore a faint ligature mark on the throat.
Police suspect the ligature marks suggest that the woman possibly hung herself from a rope but the body have been sent for a post mortem examination to confirm the reason behind the death.
Police said, she was married 8 months ago and her parents live in Bihar. Neighbours at the Marqeeus said the girl’s husband and in-laws regularly used to torture her for dowry since the marriage.
Police had initially started an unnatural death case but after one of her relatives came to the New Market police station and lodged an official complaint, a case under sections under sections 302 (murder) and 498A (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of Indian Penal Code were initiated against the girl’s husband Vijay Shaw and his parents. If proved guilty, the accused can even face death penalty.
