Howrah: Howrah District Court granted bail to Pratima Dutta, the widow of Tapan Dutta of Bali in Howrah murdered in 2011 for opposing the filling-up of a water-body in the area. Several Trinamool leaders, including state co-operation minister Arup Roy, are accused in the murder case.

Pratima was arrested by cops from Howrah’s Nischinda police station on 12 August for allegedly threatening a cable operator named Ashit Bikash Dutta and also stealing his cables. The district had on 12 August rejected her bail plea and had sent her to four days jail custody.

During the hearing today senior advocate of Calcutta High Court and CPI-M leader Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya appeared for Pratima and moved a fresh bail petition. He argued that if arrest was necessary, police should have arrested Prtima way back in March when the FIR was registered against her. But arresting her now was nothing but a motivated move to weaken her conviction to fight for justice in her husband’s murder case.

The government lawyer opposed the reasoning and said that the plea should be rejected else the accused might influence the probe. On hearing both the parties, the judge granted bail to Pratima on a personal bail bond of Rs 5,000.

This on a day the Calcutta High Court deferred the hearing to 7 September on a petition by Pratima for a CBI probe into the killing of her husband Tapan Dutta.
