Rio De Jenerio: In a match up of two soccer powers, Portugal beat Argentina in Group D play at the Olympic Stadium.
The two teams were relatively level through the first half as they remained scoreless. Portugal held more possession while Argentina threatened on the counter attack. Argentina had a great chance to score early in the second half as Johnathan Calleri chipped the ball over Argentine goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, but the shot hit off the crossbar to keep the score 0-0.
In the 66th minute, Portugal’s Paciencia opened the scoring as he received the ball at the top of the box and sent a low shot past Rulli to give Portugal the lead. Argentine substitute Cristian Pavon had his shot saved by Portugal’s Bruno Varela in the 74th minute as Argentina looked to equalize.
Argentina’s chances of getting a result from the match took a big hit in the 84th minute as Portugal’s Pite scored on a long range effort that was mishandled by Rulli. The Argentine goalkeeper had the ball go in between his legs and into the back of the net to make the score 2-0. Argentina’s Giovanni Simeone had his shot saved off the line by a Portuguese defender in stoppage time as the game ended 2-0.
The loss for Argentina is the country’s first men’s Olympic soccer loss in 20 years. Argentina won Olympic gold at the 2004 and 2008 Games and did not appear at the 2000 or 2012 Olympics. Portugal takes three points from match while Argentina remains at 0 points. Portugal takes on Honduras it is next match on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Argentina faces Algeria at 5:00 p.m.
