New Delhi: Congress President Sonia Gandhi will not campaign for the crucial Uttar Pradesh elections, which starts in less than two weeks, top party sources have indicated on Tuesday.
Sources say the decision was taken to let Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, who led Congress into forging an alliance with Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party, take the centre stage.
Sonia Gandhi is not in the best of health, sources said, but this is not the reason for skipping the campaign. This will be one of the first elections for Mrs Gandhi in Uttar Pradesh where she will not be campaigning.
At a recent joint press conference with Rahul Gandhi, the first since the alliance, Akhilesh Yadav on a question if Mulayam Singh and Sonia Gandhi would campaign for the alliance, had said it had “their blessings”.
SP patriarch Mulayam Singh has said that he does not approve the alliance with Congress and will not campaign for his son.
