Political race begins for IISCO credit

Kolkata: Just hours after Prime Minister Modi left West Bengal, the political ‘bigwigs’ of the state have started their campaign to attain political mileage for the IISCO expansion project.

CM Mamata Banerjee has claimed that the project has expanded because of their initiatives. Mamata said, as a minister of the former NDA government she approached former PM AB Vajpyee to revamp the project. The CM also stressed that they took the role as a pioneer seeking the land for IISCO expansion project.

Rejecting the CM’s statement, the former CPM MP of Asansol, Bansogopal Chaudhury has claimed that Buddhadeb Bhattacharya was the man, who met former PM D. Manmohan Singh in 2006 and brought in 10,000 crore for modernization of IISCO. He accused the state’s ruling party TMC for protesting the project earlier.

Giving the voice in the swan-song, Left Front Chairman Biman Basu said that now Mamata Banerjee is exploiting the IISCO issue to boost further political mileage. Bimanbabu also demanded that it was the former Left Front government of WB, which had primarily initiated the IISCO expansion project.

Amidst the race, it is to be noted that in the 90’s, IISCO had transformed into a ‘sick unit’; and was placed in the BIFR list.
