Police Nab Militants In Assam

Guwahati: The Army and Assam Police apprehended two militants of the National Socialist Council of Adivasi (NSCA) and one of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit) in separate operations in Assam on Thursday. While the NSCA militants were nabbed in the East Karbi Anglong district, the NDFB(S) cadre was arrested from Chirang.

“Based on information from an Army intelligence unit, troops of the Red Horns Divison carried out operations with the police near Hatoka in the East Karbi Anglong district of Assam. Binod Gowla, the self-styled deputy commander-in-chief of NSCA and another cadre of the outfit were apprehended during the swift surgical strike. A 7.65 mm pistol, grenade and ammunition were recovered from them. The two were involved in extortion and other lawful activities. NSCA is one of the fringe outfits that harasses locals and issues threats for extortion. This strike will stem the rise of such outfits in the district,” said Lt Col Suneet Newton, PRO, defence, Guwahati.

The Army and police carried out another operation in West Daisamguri of Chirang early on Thursday and apprehended Hwbtasad Brahma (20) alias Darga alias Jathi with a pistol and ammunition. He was allegedly involved in extortion on NDFB(S)’s behalf and passing on details of potential targets for extortion to the outfit’s senior leaders in Myanmar. Brahma was also involved in supplying arms to NDFB(S) cadres, Newton said.
