Police General Killed in North Sinai Explosion

Cairo: A brigadier general and a conscript from the Egyptian police force died from an armoured car explosion in North Sinai in the early hours of Monday morning, state media reported.

The bomb was allegedly planted on the side of the road and detonated remotely, state media reported, citing a security official. The victims have been identified as brigadier general Ahmed Kamal Mahmous, 49, and conscript Kirollos Wahib Fahmy, 21.

Three other conscripts were wounded with shrapnel and taken to the Suez Military Hospital. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

This event comes just after the Armed Forces claimed to have successfully thwarted an attempted ambush on a checkpoint Sunday in Sheikh Zuweid, killing 14 militants and apprehending 12.

In a statement made through his Facebook page, the official army spokesman said that it came as part of Operation Martyr’s Right, which has seen strong cooperation between the army and the North Sinai police.
