PMK urges Government to take up fishermen issue

Chennai: Pakkali Makkal Katchi (PMK), an ally of NDA, today urged the Narendra Modi led government to take up the issue of fishermen when newly sworn in Sri Lankan President Maithripala Srisena comes to India on his first foreign visit after taking charge of the Sri Lankan Government. The party said that the Sri Lankan government should release the boats of fishermen in its custody.

After the new Government came to power, Colombo announced the release of the Indian fishermen languishing in its jails but didn’t mention anything about the boats that are also in their custody. Party founder S Ramadoss said that since the issue came directly under the control of the President and he needs no political or legal opinion to decide on the matter.

He said that the release of the fishermen is really a true goodwill gesture on the part of Sirisena but the government should hold detailed discussion with the Sri Lankan President to find a permanent solution to the fishermen issue.
