New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today conveyed greetings to the people on the occasion of Pongal, Bihu, Makar Sankranti and Uttarayan festivals.
“As we celebrate various festivals across India, my greetings to our citizens. May these festivals bring joy and prosperity in our lives,” PM Modi tweeted.
“To all friends in Gujarat, best wishes on Uttarayan. Best wishes to the people of Assam on Magh Bihu,” he said.
“Bhogi (first day of the four-day Pongal festival) greetings to all those celebrating. May this day bring happiness in everyone’s lives. My heartiest Pongal greetings to people of Tamil Nadu.”
“On Makar Sankranti, I extend my heartfelt greetings to people across the nation,” the prime minister said.
Makar Sankranti is an Indian festival celebrated in almost all parts of India and Nepal in many cultural forms. It is a harvest festival.
Makar Sankranti marks the transition of the sun into the zodiacal sign of Makara (Capricorn) on its celestial path. The day is also believed to mark the arrival of spring in India and is a traditional event.
Makara Sankranthi is a solar event making it one of the few Indian festivals which fall on the same date in the Gregorian calendar every year: 14 January, with some exceptions when the festival is celebrated on 15 January
