Lucknow: Fear of failure often drives UP Board students to desperate measures. Sample this: ‘Sir main ek ladki hoon. Meri shaadi June 28 ko hai. Mujhe pass kar dena nahi to ghar waale gusse mein rahenge (Sir, I’m a girl and getting married on June 28. Please pass me otherwise my family will be upset).’
This is the message in Hindi that a UP Board examinee left in an answer sheet, requesting the evaluator to help her clear the exam because she was getting married next month. And if she failed, her family would be very upset, she pleaded.
This is not a lone message. For the past many years, apart from writing answers, the UP board examinees leave request message to the examiners, cajoling and wheedling them to award passing marks. The students cite a number of reasons, ranging from their wedding being called off to cancellation of jobs.
Some brave ones also offer lure of the lucre, attaching currency notes of Rs 50-100 denominations. An evaluator at Rajkiya Inter College, Hussainabad claimed that he have come across a 100 rupee note attached with high school (Class 10) science paper.
“At another incident Rs 100 note was attached with an answer sheet. And there was a message that said it was for refreshments,” an examiner at a Government Inter College in the state capital said.
District Inspector of Schools Lucknow, Mukesh Kumar Singh said, “these allurements never work. Teachers are professionals and these petty things make no difference. We discourage such tactics as they are useless.”
But RP Mishra, an office-bearer of UP Madhyamik Shikhak Sangh, said the UP Board should provide better infrastructure at the evaluation entre. “Teachers are not machines. They are made to sit on small benches meant for students to evaluate answer sheets which is not good,” he said.
