Kolkata: A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday against the Municipality’s decision to lease the Lake Mall to a private company named Venkatesh Pvt. Ltd. owned by Srikanth Mohta.
The litigation was filed collectively by lawyer Dwaipayan Sengupta and three others. The petitioners accused the Municipality of unlawfully favoring the company. They called for an immediate termination of the lease agreement.
The petitioner’s attorney said, competitive bidding was not conducted while leasing the Mall to the company which is totally illegal.
The petitioners accused, that Municipality had signed a contract for 60 years with the company. As per the government rule stamp duty worth 24 Crore was to be paid by the company. But Municipality signed two sets of contract each of 30 years reducing the stamp duty to a paltry 7 Lakh incurring heavy loss to the government.
They demanded immediate cancellation of the contract and asked for a fresh competitive bidding.
