Washington: US defense secretary Ashton Carter will announce on Thursday that he is ordering the military to open all combat positions to women, a US official said.
Speaking on condition of anonymity ahead of Carter’s press briefing at the Pentagon, the official said, “Yes, he will announce the move”.
The official said the changes would be phased in as part of an implementation plan next year. The official declined to offer details on the plan, which would be implemented over time, and spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of Carter’s appearance at a news conference to unveil the decision.
The decision comes nearly three years after the Pentagon first eliminated its ban on women serving in front-line combat roles and began a process that would let women compete for thousands of additional military jobs.
