Patent applications mounting due to shortage of Scan-men


New Delhi : Due to Shortage of manpower 2,26,339 patent applications are pending.  It was informed in parliament today. To a query whether a number of patent applications are stood pending for approval because of shortage of professionals, Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in a written reply to the Lok Sabha today answered "Yes". She accepted that meagre initiative in the activism of patent applications at different stages of processing are haunting the patent offices. In the four patent offices, Delhi (at 83,291) has maximum number of applications pending followed by Chennai (74,390), Kolkata (40,558) and Mumbai (28,100).
Sitharaman said, the government has taken steps to clear the stalemate. The government has approved additional 252 posts of examiners and 76 posts of controllers.
As a result, the total sanctioned strength of examiners and controllers would become 589 and 170 respectively, Union minister added. The process of recruitment has already been initiated and advertisement issued in this regard. Besides, she said, as a short-time measure, 263 posts of contract examiners of patents have also been sanctioned.
