Kolkata: In a setback to Trinamool Congress, Lok Sabha MP Soumitra Khan on Wednesday joined BJP. Khan took the membership of the saffron outfit in presence of Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and BJP leader Mukul Roy. Soumitra represents Bishnupur parliamentary seat and is likely to seek re-election on BJP ticket in the crucial 2019 polls.
TMC secretary general Partha Chatterjee said that Soumitra Khan has already been expelled from the party. He also said that the party had no communication with Soumitra for several days. He kept himself separated from the common people for long time. This is the reason why he was not working for the common people.
Partha also claimed that Soumitra very well understood that the party will not give him ticket, understanding which he joined BJP. However, Partha Chatterjee said that Soumitra was expelled from the party much before he joined BJP.
Apart from Bankura’s Bishnupur’s MP Soumitra Khan, 6 TMC MPs are likely to join BJP too.
On Tuesday, MP Soumitra Khan had lashed out at Bankura Bishnupur’s sub-divisional police officer (SDPO). He alleged that SDPO Sukamal Das wants to contest in the Lok Sabha elections. To fulfil his wish, the SDPO allegedly kidnapped his personal assistant Susanta Daw alias Gopi. He also alleged that after kidnapping him, he was disappeared.
On contacting him, MP Soumitra Khan told kolkata24x7 that, “It is no more possible to tolerate the autocratic mentality of Trinamool Congress Youth president Abhishek Banerjee. Hence, I am leaving the party and will join BJP.”
