Kolkata: After the much hyped and successful launch of Wi-Fi hot spots, the city becomes the first to have solar powered lights installed in the parks across in North India.
Kolkata Mayor Shobon Chatterjee inaugurated the solar power lamps at Deshopriya Park on Thursday. Mayor In Council Debashish Kumar told, 58 solar panel have been installed in the park with a cost of 40 lakh rupees. Halogen lights used earlier were disrupting the bird and insect ecosystem due to their bright hue, but the solar lights are eco friendly.Power minister Manish Gupta told that government is planning to instill solar lights at 300 parks across the city. The move will save around four lakh rupees on electricity charges.
The Minister said, government will further extend the process to villages and other towns. Fund will be released by the government for the installation.
